SPUD Update: Optics and Release Status

April 17, 2018

Hello SPUD Backers!

As we approach final production, all of you are close to being the first ever to have a collapsible display! This update gives the latest status of the front lens, an overview of our production preparation, our expectations for the schedule moving forward, and a new demo video that show how to use SPUD to turn your smartphone into a desktop-style computer!

Optics Update

The front lens is the last piece of the puzzle, and the only component not yet confirmed to be final. In our last update, we were waiting on our lens supplier to update the mold to address the lens consistency issues. They created a new mold using a brand new method to improve plastic flow, and they are currently optimizing that new mold with assistance from optics injection molding experts we met at part of the Luminate Optics Startup Accelerator program. They expect to have the next iteration ready by this Friday China time, and we are hopeful that it show the improvement we need. While the supplier seems confident that they will be able to meet all requirements, we can’t schedule final production until we know they can produce high quality lenses! Finalizing with our current supplier is the preferred option in terms of cost and schedule impact, and Alex and George are working directly with this supplier in an effort to get to a resolution as soon as possible.

Production Preparation

While our main focus has been on resolving the lens issue, we have also had to finalize and prep all the other components needed for production.

Chassis (including the projector, battery, PCB, enclosure): The projector and battery are ready and waiting at the warehouse of ODM, and the PCB and enclosure will be produced just prior to the production build.

Shroud
(including the first wrinkle resistance projection screen and fabric): The projection screen manufacturing is almost complete, and the fabric has been finalized and ordered. We expect the fabric to take 2-4 weeks to produce, and an additional 4 weeks for our sewing factory to complete the shrouds.

Custom Retractable Arms
: As mentioned in the last update, we updated the arm design to significantly increase durability. The mold for this new design is complete, and we expect to test and validate the mold-produced arms over the next 2 weeks before placing the final production order.

Protective Cover: The production covers have already been fully assembled, and we are currently prototyping new straps that can be added to the existing covers to increase the ease of folding. We expect to finalize the strap over the next 4 weeks.

Expected Remaining Schedule

We don’t have an exact date for when the lens will be finalized and confirmed working since the supplier is still iterating the mold. Once we do get to that “confirmed working” point, we expect the remaining schedule to ship out date will be:

  • 1-2 weeks for order processing, order scheduling, and machine preparation.
  • 4 weeks to manufacture 2000 lenses (assuming a pass rate above 90%).
  • 2-4 weeks to build and test full SPUD, time dependent on pass rate.

We are very grateful for your continued support and are very excited to get you your SPUD. We will continue to be transparent as we move towards kicking off mass production!
